The Clean Beauty Switch – Understanding Labels & Standards

If you missed the first part of our two-post series about making the clean beauty switch from head to toe, catch up here. We reviewed the lack of meaningful industry standards for beauty and personal care manufacturers, and what you can do to make the switch to clean beauty instead. In the second part of our series, we’re showing you how to recognize labels and certifications on beauty and personal care products that actually mean something.

It Starts With Knowledge

Forget all-natural and green and botanical, which are largely meaningless terms that aren’t regulated in any way. When this kind of language isn’t accompanied by actual certifications, it’s easy to understand that it’s little more than a marketing ploy. Knowing when terms really mean something requires a little industry know-how.

Take fragrance, for example. It’s the ubiquitous ingredient in nearly every mainstream beauty and personal care product. But this mild catch-all term is actually used to describe a medley of undisclosed ingredients. According to the Environmental Working Group, while manufacturers of beauty and personal care products are required by law to list ingredients, there are two exemptions – fragrance and trade-secret formulas.

Fortunately for the clean consumer, you can avoid this questionable loophole altogether. While a pleasing scent makes beauty and personal care products all the more enjoyable, you don’t need to sacrifice safety – as long as you know what to buy.

Certified Clean

Essential oils are plant extracts with unique fragrances and medicinal properties ranging from relaxing to invigorating to immune boosting. And while essential oils are one of the ingredient groups often used in clean beauty and personal care products, they aren’t all equal.

In an effort to differentiate between grades of essential oils and recognize certified aromatic products, France’s Institut de Normalization Scientifique d’Aromatologie (INSA) created the H.E.B.B.D. certification, which stands for Huile Essentielle Botaniquement et Biochimiquement Definie, or Essential Oils Botanically and Biochemically Defined (EOBBD). This stringent evaluation process is one of just two recognized global standards for properly evaluating quality, and it’s the only protocol for determining the therapeutic benefit of an essential oil. This designation is a sign that a given oil has passed a meticulous sequence of evaluations conducted by third-party experts, verifying specific plant species, growing conditions, time of harvest, and chemical compounds and concentrations of the oil itself.

In other words, it’s a promise that actually means something. Here at Arôms Natur Skincare, every product meets this standard, meaning they contain the purest, highest-quality essential oils you can buy, with no suspicious additives, worrisome toxins, or potentially harmful ingredients. Our products are made in Europe under the strictest clean beauty regulations.

Everywhere in Between

That kind of standard is particularly important for intimate care products. As permeable as your skin is as a whole, it’s even more so in the vulva – up to seven times more absorbent than other parts of the body thanks to a looser cell arrangement. That means any products used here can make their way into the bloodstream in mere seconds. That should be a major concern for peri- and post-menopausal women dealing with commonly called vaginal, but in reality vulvar dryness, (https://aromsnaturskincare.com/blogs/news/vaginal-dryness-or-vulvar-dryness-learning-about-the-v) or anyone looking for a clean moisturizer. And truthfully, finding safe, effective products can be a challenge. Fortunately, a little digging will quickly reveal that you do have options. Nourish Your V by Arôms Natur Skincare is a soothing, clinically-tested oil blend that meets EOBBD standards and contains no toxic chemicals, making it ideal for replenishing moisture, calming irritation, and soothing intimate skin.

Consider the alternative. The cumulative effect of a lifetime of intimate care products with unhealthy ingredients is sobering – a vastly increased risk of bacterial and yeast infections, pelvic inflammatory disease, even cervical cancer and increased incidences of STIs. Now imagine the added whole body burden brought on by the use of these chemicals all over your body.

Making the Switch

Going clean with your beauty and self-care regimen isn’t always easy. At this point, it means scrutinizing ingredient lists, researching names you don’t recognize, putting your faith in businesses and brands that champion appropriate vetting processes for their products and making your preferences clear with your wallet. We applaud brands and retailers like Credo, Follain, The Detox Market, Goop, Onda Beauty, and Citrine for their commitment to products we can safely use, and we encourage lifestyle influencers and beauty boxes like The Organic Bunny, The Glamorganic Goddess, and BeautyHeroes to continue their clean efforts as well. It’s an uphill battle, but it’s our health on the line.

Remember, clean beauty is at its most effective when you go all-in. Swapping your hand lotion and favorite powder are both sensible changes but don’t stop there. Make the clean beauty switch from head to toe, and everywhere in between. Products by Arôms Natur Skincare is a good place to start.
